Sukkos

Sukkos Lulav and Esrog
Checked for kashrus and carefully packaged to remain fresh and in tact, thousands of lulav-and-esrog sets make their way to Jewish homes across the country, giving every Oorah family a chance to share in this beloved mitzvah.

Sukkah Building
Children, parents and even grandparents sometimes break into a joyful dance at the completion of their first sukkah erected in their own back yard. Oorah makes it happen, supplying the sukkah as well as volunteers to erect it, usually with the enthusiastic help of family members. Often, the sukkah becomes the talk of the neighborhood as friends and extended family come to share a rich, authentic Jewish holiday experience.

The Sukkah Exchange
Oorah provides a matchmaker service that takes used sukkahs in good condition from families who are replacing or discarding them, and gives the sukkahs to families who need them.

Trips

Chol Hamoed Trips
Kids who went on Oorah’s Chol Hamoed trips two decades ago still recall them as some of their fondest childhood memories. What’s so special? First of all, there are the exciting destinations like Great Adventure and New Roc City. But most of all, there’s the phenomenal spirit of friendship as kids and counselors reconnect and plunge head-first into a day of fun and excitement. More than 600 children joined in the Sukkos 2010 trip to New Roc City, and there are more participants each year.

Purim

Purim Seudah
No one could describe the combination of zaniness and holiness that Purim brings. It has to be experienced, and that is what more than 800 guests do each year at Oorah’s annual Purim seudah in Lakewood, NJ. Arriving from all over the tri-state area and beyond, families come together in an array of costumes to enjoy a grand seudah, volunteer entertainers, top-of-the-line music and dancing, plus kid-friendly attractions like a monkey, a horse-and-buggy ride and a magic show. Adding to the excitement, the Purim seudah is often the place where Torahmates meet their partners in person for the first time. No matter how many Purim celebrations a person has been to, Oorah’s is always something special.

Sukkos

Simchas Bais Hashoeiva
The Talmud describes the Simchas Beis Hashoeiva in the days of the First Temple as the epitome of joy. Oorah does its best to evoke that spirit with a delightful night of good food, music, dancing, inspiring words of Torah and the warmth and friendship that are the main features of every Oorah event.

Mechiras Chometz
To help ensure that every Oorah family fulfills the obligation to sell its chometz before Passover, Oorah established its own Mechiras Chometz program, resulting in hundreds of families having the opportunity to fulfill a vital mitzvah.

Oorah's families speak...
"...It was because of Oorah sending that sukkah that we now observe Sukkot!" Angela Homapour

my faith and my love for our Jewish heritage

Having our very own sukkah was so moving and it has become our family tradition to make decorations. Going to the Shabbatons and Purim parties helps the children feel a part of a bigger whole than just our family, and my learning has strengthened my faith and my love for our Jewish heritage

Oorah remembers us every holiday.

Oorah remembers us every holiday. They provided us with a sukkah that I would have never purchased on my own. The truth is, it was because of Oorah sending that sukkah that we now observe Sukkot!

celebrate Shabbos and all the holidays

I have 2 grown sons who had no interest in learning about Judaism until they saw the 'holiday packages' that come before every holiday. Their curiosity caused them to ask questions and now we celebrate Shabbos and all the holidays together.

little things that make a difference.

I remember receiving a package from Oorah in the mail before one of the Jewish holidays, and my daughter was so happy. It's really the little things that make a difference.
