School Placement & Assistance

Placement & Assistance

Numerous studies have shown that the best indicator of a strong and lasting Jewish identity is a Jewish day-school education. Immersed in this positively charged atmosphere, children learn about their heritage and develop the language skills and knowledge to form a meaningful connection to Jewish tradition while strengthening their bond with the Jewish community and benefiting from the caring and wise counsel of devoted teachers.

Enrollment

Enrollment
Choosing the right school is essential to a child’s success. Oorah works with more than 100 day schools and yeshivos nationwide to provide an excellent education in both Jewish and secular studies to any child that wants it. Ensuring that the every child is matched with a suitable school, Oorah’s experienced, professional staff of rabbis and educators, headed by Rabbi Tzvi Aryeh Yoffe, carefully guides families through the enrollment process. The result is clear to see. As one mother wrote, “My children are all doing beautifully. I couldn’t ask for a better school….The kids – just seeing them – I can’t tell you how wonderful it is.”

Tuition

Tuition Assistance
Making the transition from free public school to tuition-based day school can put a strain on the family budget. However, Oorah does not allow money to stand between a child and his or her Jewish heritage. It offers a wide range of tuition assistance programs so that every family sincerely interested in giving their child a comprehensive Jewish education can do so. To Oorah, the cost of tuition assistance is a highly profitable investment. That’s because every dollar in tuition ensures a more vibrant, meaningful future for each child Oorah assists. Day School

Day School Liaisons
“How was school today?” When parents ask that question, they want to hear one answer: “Great!” But the truth is that kids sometimes run into trouble at school. Sometimes the lessons may be too hard, sometimes too easy or boring. Sometimes the classmates might not be a good fit for the child. Sometimes there’s friction with a teacher. When Oorah places a child in day school, that child’s daily challenges become Oorah’s concern. Our day-school liaisons, headed by Rabbi Yehoshua Weinstein, regularly visit each school with which Oorah is involved, speaking to principles and teachers to make sure the children stay on track. If help is needed – for instance, a tutor or mentor, Oorah makes sure the need is filled. For Oorah children, there’s no such thing as “falling between the cracks.”

Book Buddies

Book Buddies
Children often need some catching up with both Hebrew and general studies, especially when transferring to a new school. Oorah provides tutors to get the children up to speed, so they can learn with confidence and success.

The Israel Experience

The Israel Experience

A post-high-school year of study in Israel is a time to synthesize all the years of day school education into the clear world-view of an educated Jewish adult. It brings everything into focus and makes Jewish philosophy, values and observances into a compelling, inspiring framework for life.

Israel Connection

The Israel Connection
For students alone in a strange country, and for their parents back home, the prospect of a year abroad in Israel can be daunting. That’s why Oorah’s Israel “parents,” the warm and welcoming Rabbi and Mrs. Binyamin Kohn, offer a home-away-from home for Oorah’s Israel students.

Whether they need to use a phone or a computer, need some help navigating the system, or want a place for Shabbat, students know they have an address to turn to. They also come to the Kohn’s regularly to receive the monthly stipend Oorah provides to its Israel students. In this way, although the students are far away, they’re not alone.

Oorah's families speak...
"The financial assistance with Jewish Day School helps to make our dream of a Jewish education for our girls a reality." Serena Jacobs

My kids are thriving in their Jewish schools

Oorah has been helping us with tuition since September, 2004. If not for Oorah's help, we probably couldn't have afforded a Jewish education for the children. Now we are completely shomer Shabbos, living in an Orthodox community, attend shul every Shabbos and my kids are thriving in their Jewish schools.
